VAT Question
This is not strictly a VAT question but where can I find out more information on importing and exporting goods into and out of the UK?
VAT Answer
On the VAT helplines we are regularly asked Customs and Excise questions regarding the practical side of physically moving goods into and out of the UK.
Whilst we do have a broad overview of many aspects of importing and exporting goods and how that relates to completing a VAT return, we are not experts on the details required for the accompanying documentation, finding commodity codes and specifics for the Customs & Excise procedures at the borders.
Don’t forget your client’s Freight Forwarders are an excellent source of information as they deal with the physical movement of goods on a daily basis.
For more detailed practical information HMRC have made the following telephone numbers available which may be useful:
- Import/ Export helpline 0300 322 9434 Open 8am to 10pm Monday to Fridays and 8am to 4pm at weekends.
- Export support team 0300 303 8955 Open Monday to Fridays 8am to 6pm.
